The annual ITEC Grey College U18 water polo tournament took place at Grey College over the past week and provided a thrilling three days of action by many of the top schools in the country.
St David’s Marist Inanda (Johannesburg) claimed the bragging rights for 2019 after edging Grey High School from Port Elizabeth 7-6 in a thrilling final. St Benedict’s, also from Johannesburg, took the bronze with an 8-4 win over another Port Elizabeth school, Pearson High School.
For the hosts, Grey College, it was a tournament of mixed fortunes, with wins over York High School (18-0), St Peter’s College (10-1) and Pearson (5-2). In the quarter-finals, the wheels came off for Grey with a 7-2 defeat to St Benedict’s, 9-2 loss to St Stithians and a 1-1 draw to Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in the 7th and 8th place play-off.
A school that needs a special mention is without a doubt York High School from George. While York suffered heavy defeats in every single one of their games, it is an amazing feat for the school without their own pool to come and compete in an elite tournament. The water polo programme was started at the school with only eight boys four years ago, in that time managed to develop and generate enough interest in the sport for them to travel to Bloemfontein for their first-ever major tournament. – MORGAN PIEK
