If you are a writer or storyteller, who has been looking for an opportunity to showcase your skills now is your time to shine.
The National Arts Festival and Distell have decided to join forces to showcase fresh storytellers and new voices by hosting the Distell National Playwright Competition. This competition is run in honour of Adam and Rosalie Small, who made a significant impact on South Africa literary, philosophical and educational landscape and it is for storytellers who have never staged their work before.
Artists need to submit a synopsis of a play which includes a 10 page writing sample and all the ideas submitted should be original.
After all the submissions are in and the adjudication process is complete, five plays will then be chosen for a process of development, which includes workshops, masterclasses and/or mentorships.
The winning play will be announced and awarded a production budget and will be showcased on the Main Programme or Arena at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in June 2019.
The competition is open to all South Africans who are over 18 years of age and the submissions can be in any of the 11 official languages. The closing date for all submissions is on 30 November at 17:00.
