Shimlas excited for Varsity Cup opener despite 11 debutants

The 11th edition of the hugely popular Varsity Cup kicks off on Monday afternoon with the defending champions, the University of Pretoria Tuks, hosting the University of the Free State Shimlas.

It’s truly a baptism of fire for the side from the Free State as they are fielding 11 debutants in the game.

The Shimlas coach, former Springbok flank, Hendro Scholtz, told OFM Sport it will be tough, but they are excited nonetheless.

“We’re looking forward to the game on Monday night. We had a good preseason, training went well so we’re looking to see guys go out and play.

“We’ve got eleven debutants for the game, so we are a really side young side at this stage, but I’m really looking forward to see what the young guys game do on Monday evening.”
