SABRINA DEAN – Bloemfontein police are looking for three suspects after a 72-year-old man and his assistant were hijacked on the outskirts of Bloemfontein yesterday evening.
Police spokesperson Chaka Marope says the men were driving back from Springfontein in a cigarette delivery vehicle and stopped next to the road as they came off the N1 highway at the Church Street offramp. He says three men, one armed, approached the vehicle, forced the victims out and locked them in the back.
They then drove to Phase 6 in Mangaung where the suspects used a grinder to access a safe in the vehicle. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes, leaving the keys in the ignition.
The two victims managed to break-out of the vehicle uninjured and drove back to the company premises.
Marope says police suspect it might have been an inside job targeting the cash in the vehicle.
Police also arrested one suspect in a second hijacking in the city last night. Three suspects hijacked a 22-year-old student in her driveway in Universitas.
They attempted to lock her in the boot of her vehicle but she fortunately escaped uninjured.
One suspect was later arrested and the car recovered at Ladybrand.
