The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has made a special plea to Water and Sanitation Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane, to stop distancing herself from water boards that are under her jurisdiction.
Samwu’s Chumani Gqeke said water boards are anti pro-transformation, anti-work and anti-trade unions which stifles transformation and progress. Gqeke’s plea comes after Sedibeng Water and its employees reached a non-agreement of wage and salary increase last week. Samwu is demanding 11.5 percent whilst Sedibeng Water is offering 7.5 percent increment.
Gqeke said if Mokonyane is not informed by issues, it will lead to water boards derailing from their schedule. He said a program of making sure that households receive water is occasionally sabotaged.
