Sasol “fire” was only a drill

SABRINA DEAN – Sasol has confirmed there was no fire at its Sasolburg plant in the Free State this morning, saying reports doing the rounds were sparked by a simulation exercise.

Sasol spokesperson Alex Anderson says safety is a high priority and they conduct regular simulations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure they are ready in the event of an emergency.

He says there is a local mutual aid agreement in place and as such the simulation is conducted in collaboration with the Metsimaholo Local Municipality and neighbouring industry.

"Given the scale of our operations there and the proximity of the community it’s critical and essential that our emergency response protocols and systems are tip-top and functional," he says.

He says Sasol also works closely with local media to ensure communities can be appropriately informed in the rare event of a significant incident.
