SARS fraud suspect out on bail in FS

The case against a 47-year-old accountant accused of fraud has been postponed after he was arrested in Bethlehem in the Free State.

The case against Mabuseng Joseph Morebudi has been postponed to 11 August 2021 due to legal representative issues. The suspect appeared before the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 25 May 2021, on charges of fraud, OFM News reports.

Morebudi was released on R3000 bail, following his court appearance shortly after being arrested earlier on Tuesday.

It is also alleged that a preliminary probe by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) prompted a report to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein during April 2018, which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.

From 2011 to 2016, the accused allegedly failed to register to pay as you earn (PAYE) and submissions of EMP 201 returns, as well as the deduction of employees’ tax or to pay over to SARS. As a result, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) was prejudiced and suffered a total loss estimated to have exceeded R13.3 million.
