SANDF condemns criminality amongst members

In a statement, the Department of Defence (DOD) has welcomed news and commended the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Bloemfontein for the swift arrest of a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member on Tuesday, 22 August 2023 for alleged criminal activities.

The SAPS acted on information received from a registered source about a soldier residing in Brandwag, who was suspected of stealing military firearms and ammunition at Tempe Military Base and selling them to members of the Bloemfontein public.

Upon his arrest, the 31-year-old was charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of a hand grenade as well as possession of SAPS uniform.The stolen items’ value is estimated to be R90 000.

The Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya reiterated a warning to all Defence Force members that no acts of criminality will go unpunished in the SANDF.
