The ANC in the Free State has elected the current MEC for Police Roads and Transport Sam Mashinini as their new leader.
Mashinini was elected to the position of chairperson at the party’s eighth provincial conference that took place at Illanga Estate in Bloemfontein, yesterday.
William Bulwane will serve as his deputy while Paseka Nompondo takes over the reigns as Secretary General.
Mamike Qabathe will serve as Deputy Secretary General with current Premier Sisi Ntobela completing the top five, after she was elected as the Provincial Treasurer.
ANC spokesperson Thabo Meeko confirmed that the race for the position of chairperson was uncontested.
Mashinini replaces long serving chairperson Ace Magashule who was elected as the ANC secretary general at the Nasrec conference in December.
Earlier in the day, strategies that will ensure victory in next year’s elections and unity in the ANC in the Free State were some key issues that were in the spotlight at the conference.
The Minister of Communications and NEC member Nomvula Mokonyane told delegates from across the province that they must not be remembered as the people who destroyed the ANC in the Free State.
Earlier Cosatu also called on the newly elected leadership of the party to get rid of the factions within the ANC.
This was emphasized by by ANC Mangaung Chairperson Mxolisi Siyonzana who said that should the party manage to unify, they will have no problem winning next year’s elections.
The conference was delayed by four hours due to late registrations. – Mark Steenbok/OFM News
