Safety of all officials is a priority: Grace Molatedi

GALOOME SHOPANE This year’s national correctional service’s week has been overshadowed by violent incidents at the Mangaung correctional centre in Bloemfontein.

The centre’s Grace Molatedi says the department of correctional services regrets the negative incidents that happen at all correctional centres, particularly the recent events at G4S. Molatedi says security is a priority to them and they are working with the police to deal with the challenges they are currently facing.

Molatedi says “the safety of all officials is a priority in the department of correctional services, however, we do experience some security challenges from time to time.

And as a department we are putting systems in place based on the lessons that we have learned on the incidents that have taken place.”

Just days into the seven-day long programme which ends tomorrow, a female warder spent 12 hours in a cell against her will, while two of her male colleagues were stabbed in the face with foreign objects.
