Rocking its way to the top, Bloemfontein’s four-piece indie rock band, Safety First!, has a soulful vocal melody with a young and rustic sound where something beautiful is invited to join the chaos.

What started out back in 2011 as the writing of song lyrics between two friends, Dylan Retief and Marius Kruger, turned into a journey, from releasing multiple EPs to touring together as a group of friends making music and good memories. The band “Safety First!” was fully developed in 2017 after the four members had crossed paths over the years.

According to Dylan, the band can make you cry and dance at the same time. He told Bloemfontein Courant in an interview that they aim to talk to the youth about how hard it is to grow up, doing so with a melody that makes it worth the party. “Lyrics to connect to and a melody to dance to, that is what Safety First! is all about,” Dylan said.

The band currently consists of four members, including Dylan Retief (writing of lyrics, vocals and rhythm guitar), Dewald Bux (lead guitar), Kamo Poone (drums) and Gavin Coetzer (bass guitar).

The much celebrated band has recorded two five-track EPs at the one and only Willem Daniel Jonker helped them shape the sound. Their first EP, titled “Good time overdose”, has a mixture of 5 songs with a very indie vibe to keep the listener calm. Their second EP, titled “Home is where the yard is”, was number 1 for three weeks on kovsieFM’s cliphard Rockchart.

With a bright future ahead, the band has big plans for 2021; from playing at festivals like Misty Waters and Splashy Fen just to name a few, to who knows, maybe the release of a full length album.
