The one-of-a-kind Rooibos bra was bought for a cool R10 000 at a private auction held in Johannesburg on Sunday. Proceeds from the sale will go towards educating more women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

The Rooibos bra captured the hearts and minds of thousands during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Courant reported that the bra was made out of donated Rooibos tea bags from people across the country. The unconventional idea is the brainchild of the SA Rooibos Council (SARC), Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and lingerie retailer Storm in A-G Cup.

“While only 450 Rooibos tea bags were used in the final design, the bulk of the donated tea bags was used to trial various styles. Rooibos tea was specifically chosen as it contains powerful antioxidants that help fight inflammation, a leading cause of cancer,” explained Adele du Toit of SARC.

The Rooibos bra was snapped up by actress and international model, Justine Gundelfinger. In total more than R183 000 was raised from the various items that went on auction and all the proceeds will go to CANSA.

The bra has helped CANSA to educate scores of women across SA about the importance of regular self-breast examinations and Clinical Breast Examinations, and the role that these screening tools play in the early detection of breast cancer. –
