Free State police are looking for a robber in connection with an attack on a couple in their house in Marquard at the weekend. Lourie van der Merwe and his wife Celia, both 60, were attacked in their bedroom just after 11pm on Saturday. Lourie sustained four stab wounds. His wife was also stabbed. The couple’s daughter, Ilse Botha, told OFM News last night the intruder, who spoke English, told her parents he was there to kill them. She says the man, whose face was uncovered, forced the couple to their living room. He then hit them over the head with dumbbells.

Botha says the intruder tried to set her father alight and force him to eat Rattex. He refused after which Celia managed to escape. The suspect followed her but returned and found Lourie in the kitchen. According to Botha her injured father managed to kick and push the robber who later fled the scene. Police spokesperson Phumelelo Dhlamini, says a cell phone and more than R200 were stolen. A case of house robbery is being investigated. – Christal-Lize Muller
