The N3 has been closed down by truck drivers since yesterday (25 October) at around 23:20 in an attempt to get the attention of the minister of transport, Fikile Mbalula.
According to the Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, a group of about 30 truck drivers have parked their trucks on the N3 near Montrose, 20 km outside Harrismith closing the road completely. Makhele explained that the closure of the national road is caused by the drivers’ grievance about foreign truck drivers being permitted to drive trucks in the country.
He said as result of the peaceful demonstration, traffic has lined up for 1 km in both directions.
“At the moment, the drivers are peaceful and just standing around. No acts of violence have been reported,” said Makhele. He assured the public that Public Order Police have been deployed and some of the trucks have been starting to move.
