Duane Petrus – South Africans around Bloemfontein are generally sad at the passing of former president and struggle icon Nelson Mandela. President Jacob Zuma announced late last night that the former statesman had departed at 20:50 at his Johannesburg home with family members by his side. The citiy’s streets were quiet in the early morning, but those out in public were mostly informed about his death. Bloemfontein Courant spoke to residents to hear how the news struck them and where they were when they heard it. Zolake Mepha was in Westdene and shared his feelings around this. "I hope his legacy lives for a lifetime. He is the epitomy of humanity, how people should be. He fought for what he believed in and what he stood for," Mepha said.
