Remind firearms licence holders to renew their licences timeously

Article 24 of the Firearm Control Act 2000 (60 of 2000) regulates the renewal of firearm licences. Section 24 (1) prescribes that the licence holder should start the renewal process at least 90 days before the date of the expiring of the licence and Section 24 (4) guarantees the that a licence remains valid until the application is decided on, on condition that the application for renewal of the licence was done within the period allocated for it in section (1). The period of validity of licence for firearms for self-defence purposes is five years.
If a firearm licence holder did not renew his or her firearm licence in time, the result is that the firearm owner is illegally in possession of a firearm and the firearm can be confiscated and the owner could be arrested. Members of the public in general are urged to renew their firearm licences within 90 days before the expiry date on the licence card. For more information on renewal of firearm licence, firearm licence holders can visit their nearest police station.
