Emotions were running high at the late Deputy Mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Connie Rampai’s memorial service earlier today (Thursday) at the Christian Revival Church in Bloemfontein. Speaker after speaker described Rampai as a humble and hardworking person. Those who attended the service were among others the provincial leadership of the ANC, MECs, Mayors and MPLs.
Speaking at the service, Mangaung Metro’s Mayor, Thabo Manyoni, who was quite emotional, highly praised Rampai’s work ethic. Meanwhile, Free State Premier, Ace Magashule, said Rampai’s family can only find solace in God during this time of mourning. He also used the platform as an opportunity to campaign for the ANC.
“Is there a person who can say that the dignity of a black man, child and woman has not been preserved and restored? It was not out of choice but because of the struggle of this movement. It was also not because of the struggle of an individual but the masses of our people under the banner of the ANC. The party is now 104 years old and various leaders of the party came and others are no more, although this giant movement still exists.”
The alliances of the ANC comprising Sanco, Cosatu and the SACP also made their tributes and emphasised that Rampai’s death should be a unifying tool to all alliances within the party. Rampai died in a fatal vehicle accident early Saturday morning on the N1 between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei.
