Lebohang Pharoe (22), a sports presenter at the Botshabelo-based community radio station, Mosupatsela FM, fell in love with sports presenting while at Batjha Primary.
The young, energetic sports presenter told Courant that his love for sports started when he used to take part in athletics, running 100-m races. He was introduced to sports presenting by Richard Ndima, who was doing sports at the time on Mosupatsela FM. From then on, Pharoe never looked back. He is inspired by radio greats such as Nyakalo “Ba2cada” Leine, Robert Marawa and his mentor, Richard Ndima.
This year marks his second year as sports presenter for the afternoon drive show which airs from 15:00 to 18:00 and the current affairs show, which airs from 18:00 to 19:00. Pharoe said that being a sports presenter has given him the opportunity to meet professional soccer players such as Khama Billiat from Mamelodi Sundowns.
It has also given him the opportunity to grow as he one day hopes to work for a national media house. He said the highlight of his career was reporting during the annual SA Sports Awards, which were held in Bloemfontein in November last year. “It was an exciting moment and it gave me the opportunity to get access to communicate directly with PSL Clubs. I also met some of the SABC sports analysers. This has meant a lot to me.”
Lebohang also co-hosts a show called Re Ja Scamtho together with Thapelo Ntsalong under loveLife Y-Center, aired every Saturday between 12:00 and 13:00. The show is aimed at dealing with the challenges the youth are facing. He also hosts a show called Ditumelo Tse Fapaneng, a religious show between 21:30 and 00:00.
As the interview neared its end, Pharoe smiled and said: “Before I forget, let me just say a special thank you to my parents for their support, I really appreciate it.” – Lebakeng Nkabi
