Pupils who torched Free State school still free

Duane Petrus – The pupils who set an administrative block alight at the Bartimea School for the Deaf and Blind in Thaba Nchu on Friday have not yet been identified by the police.

Free State police spokesperson, Consolation Mokoale, they do not know how many pupils were involved in the violence.

The learners were unhappy over a fence which was erected in April to separate the girls and boys hostels.

The reason for the separation is because there had allegedly been rape incidents at the girls hostel in the past.

The spokesperson for the education department, Howard Ndaba, yesterday said they are busy conducting their own investigation to identify the culprits, who will face disciplinary action.

The head of the department, Stanley Malope, said ON Friday that some boys involved in these rapes have been ordered by the court to undergo counselling.

He dismissed rumours that the violence erupted over unhappiness over the principal and her deputy.
