According to the Setsoto Municipal Manager, Tshepiso Ramakarane, public servants should start by getting the basics right.
Ramakarane’s utterances comes after Setsoto, comprising Ficksburg, Marquard, Clocolan and Senekal, was named the best performing municipality in the Free State for the year 2015 based on the average index score achieved in Ratings Africa’s annual Municipal Financial Stability Index (MFSI).
The agency analysed the annual financial statements of municipalities during the 2014/15 financial year and then rate them in terms of operating performance, liquidity positions and budget practices.
According to Ramakarane, there is no one-size-fits-all solution in the public sector.
“The important thing is that all of us who are in the public sector, those who have committed to serve the public, must develop an attitude towards sacrificing and serving our people and a quest to zero defect. Meaning, it is the continual process of ensuring that everyday becomes better than the previous day and we do that by focusing on getting the basics right. The department of Cooperative Governance launched a programme dubbed “Back to Basics”. If all of us implement that on a daily basis, nothing will be impossible.”
