Public alert: Thefts out of motor vehicles

The South African Police Service would like to once again make the public aware that criminals are striking at parking lots in different shopping malls around Bloemfontein.
Motorists must at all times be extra careful when locking their vehicles and must physically ensure that their vehicles are in fact properly locked before walking away.
The police would like to specifically inform the public again, with regard to the method or modus operandi used by the perpetrators to steal valuables out of various makes and models of vehicles, without having to gain entry forcibly.
Their modus operandi entails that the criminals fool motorists into thinking that they have locked their vehicles simply by pressing the button on a gate remote or any type of remote control. As a result, this action can block the signal sent simultaneously from the car’s key by its owner which interferes with the locking mechanism frequency on the car remote, which in most instances could lead to the car not being locked. Remote signals are jammed by other remote signals.
As soon as motorists are out of sight, entry is gained to the unlocked parked vehicle, and any valuable items are easily removed from the vehicle without forced entry.
