The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, together with the Department of Education, and in consultation with the Free State Schools Athletics will be hosting the 2018 Provincial Primary Schools Athletics Championships on Saturday 3 March 2018.
The Provincial Primary Schools Athletics Championships is the bedrock for Free State learners to be selected for the provincial primary team that will participate at the National Primary Schools Championships in Paarl, Western Cape, from 15 – 17 March 2018.
A total number of 11 000 learners participated in the trials of the zone competitions, 3 500 participated at the district competitions and 900 participated at the district championships to qualify for participation in the provincial championships. Qualification was based on particular standards to ensure that completion standard is enhanced. 180 learners will be selected for the provincial team that will participate at the National Primary Schools Championships in Paarl, Western Cape.
The 2018 Provincial Primary Schools Athletics Championships will be hosted on 3 March at the Free State Athletics Stadium, starting at 09:00.
“This tournament creates an opportunity for Free State athletes to participate and excel in sport, both on and off the field of play. The tournament seeks to address the barriers of entry into the codes previously dominated by one racial group. It also creates an opportunity for Free State athletes to be identified and nurtured through the sport development continuum and creates a base for federations to select athletes for provincial and national teams,” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
