Progress in NSFAS payment of private student accommodation

The administrator of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) announced that payment of accommodation allowances was processed between the end of May 2024 and the beginning of June 2024 with the next scheduled payment expected by mid-June.

Since he was appointed, the administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, has been consulting with various stakeholders, including landlords of private student accommodation, who have expressed concerns about the outstanding payments of student accommodation allowances.

“The next scheduled payment will not be later than 18 June 2024 to clear all legitimate claims. These interventions are intended to provide the much-needed relief to private student accommodation landlords,” he said.

The administrator has urged landlords with outstanding payments not to evict students. He encouraged landlords who have not yet submitted their claims to direct their queries to NSFASAccomProv@nsfas.org.za.

Nomvalo also reiterated his call for students without bank accounts to open accounts with a bank of their choice and submit their details on the NSFAS portal to avoid delays in their payment allowances.

“The banking details provided must belong to the student to enable NSFAS to verify these against the student’s details on our record and minimise potential risks,” Nomvalo said.

The Administrator has urged the public to rely solely on official communications from NSFAS and to disregard misinformation about the scheme that frequently appears on various social media platforms.
