Preparing local scholars for the road ahead

Kamohelo Ramoeletsi, a 25-year-old from Botshabelo, is dedicated to making a positive impact in his community by preparing high school students for their future.

Three years ago, he established A Step Extra Classes, which has been offering after-school classes to grade 10 and 11 learners.

Now, Ramoeletsi aims to further extend his influence by introducing learner license classes. “We have introduced classes to obtain a learner’s license and a driving lessons programme for our students doing Grades 10 and 11. We want to equip them with relevant knowledge and skills upon finishing school. We’re doing this together with Mr Setlai from Setlai Learners Licence Classes and Mr Mosala from MZ Driving School.”

He further said they have an agriculture programme they are looking to implement. “We also introduced agriculture practicals for Grade 10 and 11 learners, where an appointed facilitator from one of the agriculture commonages teach learners about what type of animals are good for the market, how feeding and vaccination works on specific animals (pigs, cows and others) and more.”

According to Ramoeletsi, they saw an opportunity to ensure that the learners are equipped in case they don’t get admitted to universities. “By assisting our students with these programmes we know the chances of survival are extremely high, knowing how to drive will open many doors, as most corporate companies require licenses upon making applications. Knowing the basics of agriculture, which our students will have, presents more chances of successful agriculture production,” he mentioned.

Ramoeletsi concluded by saying that they currently have over 70 learners in their database and hope to assist about 80% of them during the first two terms of the year.
