The Free State awaits the announcement of the Provincial Executive Council later today. Newly elected premier, Sisi Ntombela, will present a list of the Members of the Executive Council (MECs) at 14:00 this afternoon at OR Tambo Building in Bloemfontein.

According to a statement by the Premier’s Office, the list comes after much consideration. “This announcement follows extensive consultations, which were intended to ensure that the Free State Executive Council is a capable, representative and qualitatively constituted team capable to respond to the mandate of the people of the Free State,” it read.

The Free State Legislature elected Ntombela as premier on 22 May 2019. This after the Free State African National Congress had won against opposition parties in provincial elections mirroring the party’s victory on a national scale during the General Elections earlier this month.

The announcement of MECs was set to take place at midday, however, the event was postponed to later in the afternoon for unknown reasons. MECs will be taking up portfolios of the various departments in the province.

Ntombela reportedly said during her inauguration last week that she would make significant changes in the legislature that is likely to comprise of at least 50% women and the youth. –Nomaqhawe Mtebele
