This week emphasises the importance of prenatal care for women during pregnancy. The South African government urges pregnant women to start attending to prenatal care as soon as they suspect that they are pregnant and within their first trimester.
According to a statement released by the Department of Government Communication and Information System, early prenatal care grants the mother the opportunity to manage existing medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, anaemia and so much more, which can be aggravated by pregnancy.
“Prenatal care is provided free at public health clinics, and pregnant women are encouraged to make use of this free service.
Women who suspect that they are pregnant or who have missed their menstrual period should visit the clinic or health facility closest to them as soon as possible.”
The government motivates expecting mothers to adapt to healthy lifestyle choices including a balanced diet, regular exercise and sufficient rest.
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and the development of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
The Department of Health introduced MomConnect to support maternal health using cell phone-based technologies integrated into maternal and child health services. To read more on MomConnect, visit: https://www.health.gov.za/momconnect.
