Following the fatal accident involving an Interstate bus and a truck that took place on the N8 early 10 November, the Free State Department of Health confirmed the death of a patient who was involved in the tragic accident, yet the cause of death is to be determined.

According to Mondli Mvambi, the spokesperson of the Free State Department of Health, the cause of death has yet to be determined. He cautions that conclusions about the cause of death are not to be rushed into and should not just be attributed to the accident.

“It is not simple logic to add this patient to the number of persons that died in the accident up until the results of a post-mortem are received to ascertain the cause of death,” says Mvambi.

Following the accident, the patient was admitted to the Botshabelo District Hospital on Thursday and discharged. She was then re-admitted to the Moroka Hospital on 13 November and passed on on 14 November 2022.

“She had comorbidities that were known both to herself and the health professionals that treated her. So the body was taken for a post-mortem on Monday to either rule out or confirm a trauma-related death,” says Mvambi.
