Poor labour politics should Vavi decide to quit

GALOOME SHOPANE Labour politics and the quality of our democracy will be infinitely poorer should COSATU Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi decide to quit politics. This is according to Professor Hussein Solomon from the University of the Free State.

Vavi has come out to the media saying he is considering quitting politics because of death threats for the past three years.

Solomon says the alleged political threats that Vavi has been receiving are "a representation of a dangerous and unfortunate means of conducting politics."

“I think it’s actually dangerous in terms of our politics, that we are talking about the politics of assassination, “says Solomon.

Solomon says he also thinks that “Vavi has made a great contribution to the South African political landscape and should he leave, I think labour politics will be infinitely poorer in terms of him leaving.”

Vavi has been COSATU Secretary General since 1999 when he took over from Mbazima Shilowa.
