The South African Police Service (SAPS) has sent out a statement to warn members of the Wesselsbron community to be more vigilant when it comes to elders in the communities. This comes after a young man from Wesselsbron was arrested and charged with house burglary after he stole his grandmother’s property and money.
According to a statement by the office of the provincial commissioner of the Free State, on 22 May around 12:00 the suspect broke into the house of the 84 year old complainant, who is his grandmother. The suspect broke open the door while his grandmother was away and stole property and money. An investigation was conducted and the 21 year old suspect is expected to re-appear in court again on 6 September 2019.
According to the statement, grandchildren, neighbours, close relatives and the entire society must learn to care and protect elderly people as well their properties. Police sternly warned children not to allow their elderly to stay alone for them to avoid been victims of house robberies, rape and serious assaults.
