Police warn about attacks on elderly women

GALOOME SHOPANE Free State police have issued a statement saying they have marked a rise in the number of attacks on elderly women in the province.

Police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele says they have dealt with three cases since the 30th of last month regarding the assault of older women.

Makhele says two women, aged 80 and 90, have died after being stabbed in Hennenman and Botshabelo respectively.

He says while they are waiting for forensic results to tell if the women were sexually assaulted, they are also investigating a case of rape and robbery of a 62-year-old woman from Virginia.

“These three incidents are a cause of concern for the Free State police and we are doing everything (in our best) to catch the suspects. It is becoming a trend, from Friday the 30th of November until now we already have three incidents,” he says.

Makhele says in the Boshabelo incident, a 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday and will appear in court soon.
