Police seize food meant for illegal miners

Free State police seized food that were meant for illegal miners on Sunday.

This after a member of the Welkom Flying Squad received a tip-off about food meant for illegal miners underground.

Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng mentioned that police followed up information by approaching Leeuwkuil farm in the district of Welkom where a large quantity of instant porridge packed in plastic bags were seized.

“There were no suspects found at the scene and items were seized by police members of the flying squad.  We regard this as a breakthrough, because illegal miners without food cannot survive underground.  It is clear that a lot of them will be coming out as a result of hunger.”
