A police officer from Virginia in the Free State was shot four times yesterday when a man, who allegedly wanted to shoot himself, started shooting at police from a car near Checkers in town.

Police spokesperson, Malebo Khosana, says constable Arno Cronje and another police officer accompanied a woman to her car in Union Street. Her armed husband was still in the car. Khosana says the woman and her 49-year-old husband allegedly had an argument after which she asked him to get out of the car. He refused.

According to Khosana the woman then got out of the car and walked to a nearby police station to seek help.

Upon arrival the police officers asked the deceased to get out of the car. He refused. Khosana says the police officers realised that he had a firearm with him. They asked him to surrender, but the man still refused and started to shoot at the police officers. Cronje sustained gunshot wounds and during the shooting he shot the man in the head. Khosana says Mojalefa Khantsi died on the scene.

Khosana says the couple’s teenage daughter was with them in the car. The woman and her daughter were not injured.

Cronje was rushed to a hospital in Welkom. Khosana says he is in a stable condition.
