Police members in court for allegedly accepting R100 bribe

Three members from the Police’s Emergency Services in Bloemfontein were released on bail yesterday after their arrest at the weekend for allegedly accepting a bribe of R100. Police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo says the suspects appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of corruption after they allegedly pulled over a man on a motor bike without number plates on Sunday. She says the suspects dressed in uniform allegedly told the complainant that he will not be fined on condition that they go to his house later during the day to collect R100. According to Mbambo the complainant alerted police. A trap was set for the suspects at the complainant’s house. They were arrested by members of the police’s Provincial Corruption Unit after the money was handed over to them by the complainant. The case was postponed to March 22 for further investigation and for decision by the Director of Public Prosecution. – Christal-lize Muller
