Due to the swift response by the police, two suspects were arrested during a robbery in one of the retail shops in Kroonstad on Saturday, 28 August.

According to Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, it is alleged that about five suspects entered the shop, whereupon one of them threatened the manager with a firearm and then forced him to the safe. “Another armed suspect allegedly held staff members captive in a corner of the store while money was being stolen from the tills. An undisclosed amount of money and about 67 cell phones that were on display were taken,” he said.

Makhele said the police were alerted and arrived while some of the suspects were still inside the shop. “Two were arrested and three are still at large. A firearm, allegedly used in the robbery, and some of the stolen cash were recovered from the suspects.”

It is alleged that the suspects who fled the scene with some of the stolen cash and cell phones, used a brown Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prado as getaway cars.

“The two suspects, aged 29 and 31, will appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery,” Makhele concluded.

Anyone with information that might assist to trace the outstanding suspects, should contact Captain Sello Mokhele of Kroonstad SAPS Detective Service at 073 571 5566, or call Crime Stop at 08 600 10 111, or alternatively, send information via MySAPS App.
