Free State police have encouraged communities to execute citizen arrests and hand over suspects to ensure peace and stability in their communities. This comes after the community of Bluegumbosch in the Eastern Free State arrested a 26-year-old armed suspect yesterday after he allegedly robbed a local tuck shop.
Police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says the shop’s owner was cleaning outside when the suspect approached her. He followed the woman into her shop, closed the door and robbed her of cash, airtime and cigarettes. As the suspect fled, community members seized his firearm and bag. Mophiring says he fired shots but that didn’t stop the community members from arresting him.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrates’ Court on a charge of business robbery.
