An off-duty police officer from the Batho Crime Prevention Unit died over the weekend after he allegedly shot himself with his service pistol at his home in Grasslands in Bloemfontein. Police spokesperson, Ikobeng Hlubi, says constable Simon Lungille Mpevana sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
She says Mpevana’s wife, who was in their house at the time of the incident, called a neighbour for help after she heard a gun going off yesterday after 02:00. According to Hlubi, Mpevana was rushed to a local private hospital where he later died.
No foul play is suspected. According to her, no funeral arrangements have been made yet. – Christal-Lize Muller
