Police confiscate cold drinks worth R250-thousand in zama-zama arrest

SABRINA DEAN – Welkom police have arrested 14 suspects and confiscated cold drinks worth about a quarter-of-a-million Rand, allegedly destined for zama-zama’s conducting illegal mining operations.

Police spokesperson Lebo Lechesa says the arrests came following a tip-off received this morning. She says a joint operation involving members of the K-9 unit, crime intelligence, the tactical response team and mine security was conducted at a house in St Helena in Welkom around 8am this morning.

"They were caught red-handed busy wrapping lots of cold drinks meant for the zama-zamas underground and they were immediately arrested," she says.

Lechesa says the suspects will appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of conspiracy to steal gold and attempted gold theft.
