The Welkom Public Order Police Unit, with the help of the community’s information, arrested two suspects from Mandela Park in Phuthaditjhaba for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring, on Sunday 29 October the police unit members of Welkom were on duty when they engaged members of the community with regard to a certain house at Mandela Park suspected of being in possession of an illegal firearm.

“The police followed up on the information on Monday 10 October 2023, at about 04:00, to search the identified house. Upon their arrival, they found five men. Upon searching, they found a 29-year-old man in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. It was a 9mm pistol with serial numbers filed off, and ammunition,” said Mophiring.

“The second suspect, aged 28, was found in possession of ammunition. The two suspects claimed they had the firearm and ammunition because they were victims of stock theft,” added Mophiring.
