The National Film and Video foundation (NFVF) is in the planning process of developing digital and mobile film theatres in townships across the country.
This is to address the problem of a lack of film screening opportunities for film makers within their communities. Representatives of the NFVF held a strategy session in Bloemfontein on Thursday where aspirant filmmakers had the opportunity to ask questions and sort out problems related to funding and film making.
Spokesperson, Naomi Mokhele, urged film makers to not only rely on opportunities and funding from government, but to be creative in their efforts to have their films screened. She also admitted that they have a problem in meeting the demands for film funding.
"We’re not perfect – there are many challenges. We’re struggling to meet the demand for funding for all film makers. But there are processes and helpful information on our website to overcome the problems," said Mokhele.
A study conducted earlier this year found that the film industry contributes to R3.5 billion to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
