IN PICTURES: 37 cars damaged in Welkom blaze

37 cars caught fire today at Matjhabeng Municipality in Welkom, Free State.
Firefighters from the Matjhabeng Municipality’s Fire Brigade managed to contain a blaze that started at about 14:00 in a veld near the police’s headquarters in Welkom.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Francois Klaasse, says police vehicles and private vehicles which had been impounded and stored in an open area at a storage facility of the police caught fire.

Firefighters are still on the scene, ensuring the blaze is extinguished.

Meanwhile, the police in the Free State say they can confirm that 37 cars caught fire at a police station in Welkom this afternoon and that the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

The police spokesperson, Motansi Makhele, says they are awaiting a preliminary investigation as to what might be the cost of the damage and that the police station will soon be in full operation.
