An ordinary person earning R1300 spends more of their money on food and public transport.
According to Mangaung Metropolitan Mayor Thabo Manyoni these people only live to survive and cannot better their own lives. He says public transport is costing ordinary South African citizens’ lives. Manyoni was addressing public transport operators at the transport workshop this morning in Bloemfontein. He says the importance of public transport is that it carries people’s lives.
“Without transport system, these ordinary citizens will not have access to basics. They will not be able to commute to work or go to the clinic. These are the types of people who are spending more time at work and on the road. You can’t expect people do develop like anyone person, they’re worry is about catching the next taxi or bus. This is the situation that we are faced with,” says Manyoni.
He says Metro need to make sure that they close gaps between residential and business areas.
“It is unhealthy for people to spend most of their time on public transports. This is because on a daily basis people travel from their homes to work. If we can move businesses and shops closer to the community, it would resolve the matter,” says Manyoni.
