Parliament committee urges municipalities to act

Local municipalities in the North West Province are supposed to play a role in the maintenance of community sports and recreational facilities.

This is according to the Parliament Portfolio Committee Chairperson on Sports and Recreation, Beauty Dlulane.

Dlulane says most sporting and recreation facilities in the province are not well maintained, yet the Department of Sports and Recreation allocates 15 percent to the municipalities for this.

She says the majority of facilities in the province are vandalised and in an appalling status. Dlulane urges municipalities and provincial departments to play their part.

“The facilities in the municipalities do not exist, and if they do, they are not maintained even though the Department of Sports gives them 15 percent.” Dlulane says at one municipality which was allocated the grant, funds have not been used since 2012.
