Orkney security guard injured in gun battle with zama-zamas

A security guard was shot and wounded during a shootout between the police and illegal miners in Orkney near Klerksdorp, North West police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma said the guard was injured on Sunday in an operation between Illicit Mining Task Team and security companies.

“Despite a shoot-out that ensued between the illegal miners and the police, which led to an injury of a security guard, the determined team ensured apprehension of the suspects.

During the operation, the police seized a 40kg bag of gold-bearing material and two batteries,” she said.

Botma said two people were arrested at Vaal Reefs 6 an 7 Shafts, near Orkney, after the team followed up on information.

A case of attempted murder was opened.

“The suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court soon. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) is investigating,” she said.
