A 46-year-old male sustained fatal injuries after his bakkie had collided with a train at the Marius Street railway crossing in Ferreira, Bloemfontein. This is according to Med247 who responded to the incident at around 15:10 on Sunday July 18.
According to Med247, they arrived on scene together with other emergency services to find a vehicle next to the railway line and the stationary locomotive not far from the scene.
Police from Park Road are investigating a case of culpable homicide. This is according to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, who said it is alleged that the driver of a goods locomotive from Springfontein was approaching Bloemfontein when he noticed the Ford Ranger approaching the railway crossing from the right side at a high speed.
“He hooted in an effort to make the driver of the vehicle aware that the train was approaching the crossing but the driver of the bakkie didn’t stop, was hit on the left-hand side, and dragged for ± 50 metres from the crossing. The driver of the bakkie died instantly,” said Makhele.
Messages of condolences have since been pouring in on social media for the family of the deceased. This is a developing story.
