The ANC in the Free State deny claims that Olly Mlamleli will be removed from her position as Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metro Municipality. This comes after reports circulated this week that the party’s Regional Executive Council (REC) demanded that Mlamleli be recalled because of service delivery issues.
Bloemfontein Courant spoke with FS ANC spokesperson Thabo Meeko about the alleged plans to expel the mayor. “The REC of Mangaung did not ask that the mayor be removed but what they actually raised were challenges of service delivery within the Metro. As a result of that the matter has been brought to the attention of the Provincial Executive Council, who have acted on the matter,” he said.
Meeko explained that a meeting has since been held between the two bodies involved in the claims. “We have convened a meeting between the leadership of the Metro Municipality as well as the leadership of the ANC in the region where a programme was agreed upon. There has been progress in the programme,” he expressed.
Some of the service delivery issues raised in the claims include waste management problems and a lack of major projects in Mangaung.
“The ANC has confidence in all its deployees in the province in all municipalities. We do understand and appreciate that indeed our municipalities are confronted with serious challenges. We have committed to place our deployees officials, in particular at a high standard in terms of financial performance,” added Meeko.
Mlamleli is set to continue her term as executive mayor until municipal elections takes place in 2021 to elect councils for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities. –Nomaqhawe Mtebele
