Oliewenhuis to celebrate Freedom Day


Oliewenhuis Art Museum will be celebrating Freedom Day on Wednesday, 27 April with a jam packed programme from 09:00 until 16:00.

The following activities will be hosted:

9:00- 16:00:

  • Freedom from… Freedom to… Freedom to be… An exhibition curated from the Permanent Collection of Oliewenhuis and ArtbankSA, commemorating a pivotal historical moment in South African history; the first democratic elections in 1994. All the other exhibitions on show will also be open for viewing.
  • Free African Carousel rides.
  • Colouring-in competition with colouring in stations for children in the back garden.


  • Official opening event of Freedom from… Freedom to… Freedom to be…
  • “I’m going to vote” activity: Voting for the artwork in the Freedom from… Freedom to… Freedom to be… Exhibition that according to you reflects Freedom Day the best.
  • The first 200 people to participate in “I’m going to vote” activity will receive a free cupcake

Musical entertainment with a stall selling cool drinks and snacks will be located in the back garden to enjoy. Bring your picnic baskets and relax on the lawns of Oliewenhuis.
