Oliewenhuis art collection walkthroughs

Art lovers in Bloemfontein can enjoy a carefully curated exhibition of art from all over South Africa, including the Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s permanent collection. Oliewenhuis will be launching three exhibitions at 18:00 on 2 July, with walkabouts scheduled throughout the week.

The first will be Lefeloboiketlo, a solo exhibition by Kutlwano Monyai, whose work will be displayed at the Annex Gallery with a walkabout scheduled for 3 July from 11:00. “Monyai draws inspiration from her upbringing, and domestic, cultural, economic, and spiritual environment to narrate stories,” stated the museum. Monyai reimagines and recreates functional items, creating soft sculptural installations.

On 4 July at 11:00, Learning Through Art: The museum as classroom walkabout will commence, where artworks from the Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s permanent collection will be on display in the main building. The works have been curated by the museum’s education officer, Natley Barnardo, and focus on Grade 10-12 Visual Art curriculums.

Finally, the walkabout for Invictus – Spirit of democracy will take place on 5 July at 11:00. “Drawing inspiration from the 1875 poem of the same name by William Ernest Henley, this exhibition of contemporary art, curated from the Art Bank of South Africa Collection, reflects on the unconquered spirit of a nation reckoning with uncomfortable historic truths and the audacity to dream a hopeful future,” stated the museum.
