The biggest supporter of Grey College rugby, Piet May, will be travelling with the school to various games across the country for the foreseeable future, thanks to the collective efforts of old boys of the school both locally and internationally.

May’s funding in order for him to attended the away matches were close to depletion and this led to a fund raising effort being started in order for him to continue doing what he loves doing.

May, who originally hails from Edenburg and works at the Free State Cricket Union, has been supporting the school for close to 45 years and first addressed the boys in the school assembly back in 1993.

He has become somewhat on an institution at the world renowned rugby factory, and will run out leading the teams onto the field and running the side-lines with his flag come sunshine, rain, hail and snow.

The man with a passion for the school has even appeared on the big screen in the autobiography movie about the late former Proteas cricket captain, Hansie Cronje.

Not having the 65-year-old attending games will be a huge loss for the culture of not just the rugby team, but for the school. Thanks to donations received already, May, will be in attendance for this weekend’s huge clash between Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) and Grey in Pretoria.

The school’s next match after the Affies game will only be on 28 July against Grey High School in Port Elizabeth. On Tuesday afternoon close to R5 000 had already been donated to help with May’s immediate needs, however, by the time of the Grey PE match, his fund would have grown substantially.

Other immediate needs for May is a new tracksuit as well as running shoes. Old boys have also begun with the process of new attire for May, while Runners Emporium will be supporting him with shoes.

Marzaan Venter of Grey College told Courant that response has been overwhelming.

“The Piet May fund was depleted and on Monday, and on Facebook I asked if anyone would be willing to donate towards the fund in order for him to go on the Affies trip this weekend.

“I barely posted the message and people responded, asked for the banking details and made a donations.

“In the meantime we even had people getting involved to sponsor him with shoes and a tracksuit. The response was unbelievable.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the donators for their willingness to help Piet.”

Any old boys, or anyone else looking to contribute to the Piet May Fund, can make a donation of any value straight into the school’s bank account: Grey College Secondary • Nedbank • Acc.
