The Premier said that MEC Makgoe was on his way home (Bloemfontein) after attending a meeting in Johannesburg yesterday (4 March 2023) and was adamant on returning home as he was expected to attend a church service at 09:00 in Heidedal today.

The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, says she has no words to express her deepest shock at the news of the untimely passing of Comrade Tate.

“When I was appointed Minister of Basic Education he was also appointed MEC of Education in the Free State and has been in the position ever since. The success of the province in education can be attributed mainly to his leadership, dedication, understanding of the sector and the innovation which has yielded great results. I am truly saddened by his passing,” said Motshekga.

She added that this is heartbreaking and indeed a huge loss to the sector and society as a whole. “It is a tragedy for the family, the province and the country.”

According to her, Tate was simply the best ever. He contributed immensely not only in Free State education but in the sector generally. He was a very hardworking, highly gifted but humble and respectful to all. “A trailblazer of note.”

Premier Dukwana said in the briefing that details about the funeral will be discussed with the family and made public. He also said that as a province, they will be applying to the Presidency to give the late Makgoe the dignified funeral he deserves.

MEC Tate Makgoe will be remembered by Tina Turner’s Simply the Best as he made it a tradition to wear his white suit and dance to the tunes of the song every time he led the Free State into the number one spot in the country.
