This is according to the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC in the Free State, Thembeni Nxangisa.
He says people still criticise the role played by traditional leaders, while they do play an important part in communities and government. Nxangisa explained that this is where people’s culture originated from and that it cannot be allowed to be disrespected.
This, after several complaints were received from residents who believe that the royal kings have no positive role in society these days since there are courts of law that are able to solve problems whenever calm is needed.
However, Nxangisa stated that during the time kingdoms were in charge, there were no corruption and children respected their elders. He also appreciates their presence in every meeting held in the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality, with the purpose of stabilising the municipality.
